Warm-up games
Dribbling drills
- 1v1: Pick a Goal 1v1 with two small goals to attack. Make the defender pick a side, then go the other way. A great game for fakes and quick changes of direction.
- Dribble and Turn Dribble to a line, do the turn the coach calls, then speed away. Add a defender so kids learn to turn away from pressure.
- Dribble Through the Gates Everyone dribbles a ball through as many different cone gates as they can in 60 seconds, with their head up to find an open gate.
- Goal Hunters Everyone dribbles a ball and hunts for goals. Score in any small goal, then find a new one. How many goals can you score in 60 seconds?
- Knockout Everyone dribbles in a grid, protects their own ball and tries to knock the others out. Ball out? 10 toe taps and jump right back in.
Passing drills
- Give-and-Go Pass to a teammate, sprint past the defender, and get the ball right back to shoot. This is the 1-2 that beats a defender in 7v7.
- Partner Passing Partners pass back and forth through a small gate. Then one side-steps to a new spot and the pass has to meet them there.
- Pass and Follow Pass to the next cone, then run to where you passed. Simple, busy and great for first touch.
- Passing Through Gates Partners pass to each other through small cone gates, then both move to a new gate. Count your gates in 60 seconds and try to beat your score.
- Rondo (4v1 Keep-Away) Four players on the sides of a small square keep the ball away from one defender in the middle. Five passes in a row scores a point.
- Rondo to Counter Goals A 4v2 keep-away in a square. If the 2 defenders win the ball, they race out and score in one of 2 small goals. Keep the ball, and react fast when you lose it.
Shooting drills
- Crossing and Finishing A wide player dribbles down the wing and plays a low cross. Two runners attack the near post and the far post and finish.
- Layoff and Shoot Pass into a teammate who has their back to goal, get a one-touch layoff back and strike it low to the far post.
- Slalom and Score A race for two teams: dribble in and out of the cones, then pass the ball into the small goal. First team to score 10 goals wins.
- World Cup Pairs are countries. The coach serves a ball and every pair plays against all the others to score. A busy shooting game kids love.
Defending drills
- 1v1 Jockeying The defender passes to the attacker, closes fast, then jockeys: stays low and patient, keeps them away from the gate and wins the ball.
- 2v1 Defending: Delay and Recover Two attackers go at one defender while a second defender races back. Defenders learn to slow the attack, stay goal-side and wait for help.
Attacking drills
- 2v1 to Small Goals Two attackers against one defender, with two small goals to attack. Dribble at the defender and pass when they come to you. Learn when to pass.
- 3v2 to Goal Three attackers take on two defenders and a keeper. Spread out, pull a defender in, pass to the free player and score fast.
- Overlap Run Pass to the winger and run around the outside. The winger draws the defender in, passes into the runner's path, and the runner crosses low.
- Turn and Score Get the ball with your back to goal, turn away from the defender and score in one of two small goals. Learn to look over your shoulder and turn fast.
Small-sided games
- 4v4 Four Goal Game A 4v4 game with no keepers and two small goals at each end. When one goal is crowded, switch the ball to the open goal.
- Build-Out Line Game Practice the 7v7 build-out rule. The keeper and three players play out from the back past the attackers and score by getting through a gate.
- Endless 1v1 The coach plays a ball in and the first player from each line goes 1v1 to the small goals. The moment it ends, the next ball comes in. Play never stops.
- Endless 2v2 2v2 to small goals that never stops. Score and you stay on. The pair that was scored on runs off and a new pair attacks right away with a new ball.
- End Zone Game Like football on a soccer field: score by dribbling into the end zone and stopping the ball there, or by passing to a teammate who runs into the zone.
- King of the Field Three teams, one field. Two teams play 3v3 until someone scores. The winners stay on and the waiting team runs on right away. Short games, lots of fun.
- Numbers Game Every player has a number. The coach calls a number and plays a ball in, and those players race out to play to the small goals. Call two numbers for 2v2.

Blue players are the ones doing the drill, red ones are defenders or the other team, orange triangles are cones, white frames with a net are small pop-up goals and the white dot is the ball. It plays step by step with a line under it that says what happens. Pause it or go a step back or on.
Can I change a drill?
